“The things that are close to you are the things you can photograph the best and unless you photograph what you love, you’re not going to make good art.” –Sally Mann
True for all art forms, isn’t it? It is our passion that compels us to reach out to others: give them joy, ask them to think or freak them out. Have you ever had someone notice your work…,something you really loved and thought no one would like…, and love it, too?
Felt good, didn’t it?
It is the most personal work that is the hardest to let others see because if they reject it, it feels like they are rejecting you. Like they checked the “no” box on a “Do You Like Me?” letter.
Can you call to mind your favorite photograph? What does it look like?
You can try to be what others want, but if they don’t like you for the way you are then it isn’t real. If it isn’t real, it doesn’t last.
Explore. Be honest. Keep practicing. There, you’re an artist. xoxo
